Spain is reportedly evaluating the Turkish fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet, and the news could have significant geopolitical and industrial consequences. During the SAHA 2026 trade fair in Istanbul, Turkish Aerospace Industries confirmed preliminary contacts with Madrid regarding the program. According to TAI, the Spanish Air Force has shown interest in a next-generation stealth fighter, although discussions are still in the early stages. The issue stems from the difficulties of the Spanish fleet, which still operates approximately 70 EF-18 Hornets that entered service between the 1980s and 1990s. Madrid has already ordered new Eurofighters, but the program may not be sufficient to cover future needs. The FCAS project, the European sixth-generation fighter developed with France and Germany, also continues to experience delays and industrial tensions. In 2025, Spain had already strengthened relations with Ankara by approving the purchase of 45 Hürjet trainer jets for over €3 billion. According to Turkish sources, the KAAN could also include technology transfer and greater freedom in integrating national systems compared to the American F-35. The Turkish aircraft is expected to reach Mach 1.8 and integrate advanced drone control capabilities like the Kizilelma and Anka.
