This is today's Coronell Report. A string of unsolved homicides has been plaguing Cúcuta. The most recent was that of journalist Cristian Herrera, who was investigating the alleged ties of the shadowy drug lord David Rolando Vivas López, alias El Faraón, to important local politicians. One lead the slain reporter was following was related to two other murders. The first was that of coal businessman César Ramón Flórez Anaya, who was shot to death in a coffee shop in the Caobos neighborhood of Cúcuta. Three days after the victim's funeral, his partner, Isabel Rincón Pedraza, received a call from a cell phone number inviting her to meet with some supposed friends of the murdered man. She went to a house in a gated community in Los Patios, where two men were waiting for her. One was a member of the Assembly of Norte de Santander, and the other simply identified himself as Camilo. The men claimed that the murdered miner owed them and other friends more than 3 billion pesos and that the widow had to hand over all her properties to settle her debts. There was no document to prove the alleged debts. She tried to explain that the properties were hers, that she had owned them before her marriage to the murdered man, but the men insisted that she transfer all the assets immediately. Terrified by what she considered extortion and a possible threat, the woman hired lawyer Fabio Álex Ortega to represent her. Ortega, a former ombudsman and human rights advocate, sent a letter to Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo mentioning the phone number from which the widow was possibly called to invite her to the meeting. The phone number provided by the lawyer in the complaint corresponds to the one used by Ariel Rodríguez, then a member of the Assembly of Norte de Santander, who was sworn in as a Representative to the Chamber two days ago, on July 20. The letter containing the complaint was filed with the Prosecutor's Office on November 18, 2024. A month later, on December 19, the signatory, Fabio Álex Ortega, the widow's lawyer and a human rights defender, was gunned down in the Cúcuta 75 neighborhood. The Prosecutor's Office charged three alleged members of the "Los Jota" criminal gang as the alleged perpetrators of the murder of the lawyer and former ombudsman. No progress has been made in identifying those who ordered the crime. This was one of the cases being investigated by journalist Cristian Herrera, who was murdered in front of his wife and two children a few weeks ago. As we reported here on El Reporte, two of the alleged perpetrators of the journalist's murder are relatives of Ariel Rodríguez Beltrán, now a representative in the House of Representatives for the Liberal Party. On July 20, the newly elected congressman unsuccessfully attempted to be elected to the House of Representatives' Accusations and Investigations Committee. This committee investigates those with special legal status, including Supreme Court justices, who investigate and prosecute crimes committed by members of Congress.
