Thinking Differently About Dementia | Neil Mapes | TEDxChelmsford

Neil is the CEO of Dementia Adventure in Essex, England. He explores what dementia is in its many forms and how it affects the people we love. Using the methods at Dementia Adventure Neil explains how they have discovered that whilst new memories do not get made directly in people suffering with dementia they can be created at an emotional level, a level where the feeling is recalled even if the specifics cannot. He is co-founder and CEO of Dementia Adventure. He is a Clore Social Fellow, RSA Fellow, an Honorary Research Fellow with the University of Worcester and was selected by an expert panel of judges at NESTA and the Observer newspaper as one of “Britain’s New Radicals” – 50 people and organisations changing Britain for the better. Neil has a background in clinical psychology, dementia advocacy and adventure travel. Motivated by experiences in his own family he has worked for over 20 years to enable people living with dementia to have more choice and control in how they live their lives, bringing joy and positivity into re-framing how we currently understand dementia. Neil is a widely regarded author, trainer, facilitator, and social innovator. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
