The Nervous System Shift That Helped My Digestion

As someone who has struggled with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for most of my life, I’ve always noticed that my worst flares were closely tied to emotionally charged experiences. It’s almost predictable in hindsight. The gut flare before a big exam, an important presentation, or any high-stress life moment. We often think of IBS as purely a “gut issue,” but there is already a well-established understanding that the gut is deeply connected to the nervous system. The enteric nervous system lives in the gut itself and it constantly communicates with the rest of the body. So it makes sense that anything that affects nervous system state will also show up in digestion. Theoretically, I knew this for a long time. But it wasn’t until I started working more intentionally with my own nervous system, specifically through practices that support regulation and increase oxytocin in the body, that I began to notice real, embodied shifts in my digestion. I didn't find a dramatic “cure,” I just began to notice the subtle things you only notice when they either fall apart or start to improve. I found myself feeding myself more consistently, experiencing fewer unpredictable disruptions, and most importantly, noticing a clearer link between my emotional state and my gut response in real time. If you’re someone who identifies as high-functioning but deals with chronic dysregulation, menstrual cycle symptoms, gut issues, or burnout, this video is my perspective on how the nervous system may sit at the root of all of these seemingly separate issues. If you’re new here, I’m Dayna, an integrative medicine physician and somatic coach working with the female nervous system, menstrual cycle literacy, and an embodied approach to women's health. I’ll be opening up 1:1 integrative health consults/coaching sessions for women navigating chronic dysregulation, gut issues, burnout, and menstrual cycle symptoms such as PMS, PMDD, PMOS, endometriosis, etc. If you’d like to be the first to hear when those open, you can join the waitlist here: dr-dayna-rose.kit.com/joinwaitlist If you'd like to try out somatic practice for the female nervous system, here's the directory for somatic practitioners: https://waking-womb.com/find-a-practi...
