One of the authors of this article is my guest today, Dr. Grzegorz Niedźwiedzki from Uppsala University and the Polish Geological Institute. He is one of the most interesting Polish paleobiologists, and the article in Nature summarizes 25 years of work by him and his team on just one topic. He has many more in store. In this episode, we discuss paleontological discoveries in Poland. Dinosaurs dominated the world primarily during the Jurassic Period, approximately 201-145 million years ago. The beginning of this period, the first 30 million years, is the least understood. It so happens that in Poland (in Mazovia, the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, and Silesia) we have excellent paleontological sites with very interesting finds from this period. In the areas around Radom, Szydłowiec, and my hometown of Skarżysko, several bones, numerous dinosaur footprints, and numerous coprolites—fossilized excrement—have been found. Feces have usually been downplayed by paleontologists, and rightly so. "Coprolites contain an incredible amount of information," my guest explains. Fossilized excrement doesn't stink or stain, and it contains perfectly preserved elements that the dinosaur didn't digest. These can be plant remains, but also the remains of prey: crushed bones, tooth fragments, fish scales, or even whole, complete insects. A similar amount of information is contained in fossilized so-called "coprolites." Gastral pellets, or undigested food remnants that the animal vomited. Studies of these materials have yielded many revelations. For example, we know that silesaurs (early dinosaurs or animals related to them, whose magnificent fossils were found in Krasiejów in the Opole Voivodeship) were not herbivores at all (as judged by the teeth in preserved skeletons), but omnivores. We also know that the first predatory dinosaurs were small and fed primarily on fish.
