But the way the regime has responded to this tragedy reveals, once again, the extent to which Chavismo and Castroism continue to share the same logic of power, even in this new phase. Because a catastrophe of this magnitude would test the response capacity of any state. However, the problem is that Venezuela faces this disaster under a regime that has spent years destroying the institutions, infrastructure, and capabilities that would now be essential for saving lives. And, instead of creating spaces for citizen initiative, facilitating the arrival of aid, or guaranteeing the free flow of information, the regime is once again doing the only thing it knows how to do: concentrate control, restrict independent action, and manage the tragedy with the same mechanisms of opacity, propaganda, and centralization that have characterized Chavismo and Castroism for decades.
