Fourth Floor Women’s Cell Block | Historic Licking County Jail

During our private overnight investigation of the fourth-floor women’s cellblock at the Historic Licking County Jail, the VAPORS team spent time exploring individual cells, hallways, and common areas while documenting the environment using a variety of investigative methods and equipment. The session included Spirit Box communication, the Hydra Sensor Web, REM Pod monitoring, EMF detection, thermal imaging, body cameras, camcorders, and immersive 360° footage, allowing viewers to experience the investigation from multiple perspectives as it unfolded. Throughout the investigation, the team documented a number of interesting moments, including timely Spirit Box responses, equipment activations, and several instances in which messages appeared to encourage us to “leave” or “get out.” We do want to note that we did not hear many of the spirit box comments in real time. During one communication session, the request for us to leave was heard clearly enough that we acknowledged it and stepped out of the room before continuing our investigation elsewhere on the floor. One of the most intriguing moments occurred while the team was introducing themselves, when the Spirit Box responded, “I’m Mae.” Later, while investigating the cell historically associated with Mae Varner, the name “Mae” appeared to come through multiple additional times. While these responses cannot be verified as communication with any specific individual, they stood out as one of the evening’s most memorable moments. Mae Varner’s story remains one of the best-known historical accounts connected to the Historic Licking County Jail. In 1953, she was brought to the jail for her own protection following a reported suicide attempt. Tragically, within less than an hour of her arrival, she set her clothing on fire and later died from the injuries she sustained. Whether the Spirit Box responses were coincidence or something more is left entirely to the viewer’s interpretation. Rather than focusing on a single piece of evidence, this video documents the investigation as it naturally unfolded, preserving both the quiet moments and the moments that prompted further questions.
