I drove it all the way from Charlotte, North Carolina, through Nashville, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma City, Texas, New Mexico (Albuquerque), Monument Valley, Phoenix, Arizona, and finally back to Los Angeles. And to make things even more interesting, for each leg of the trip, I asked a different friend to tag along—because what's a classic road trip without good company? But why go through all that effort for an old-school R107 Mercedes SL? Simple: This 560 SL represents the last and best of an era, built from 1971 to 1989, when Mercedes over-engineered everything. It’s the final evolution of the R107 generation, which included classics like the 350 SL, 450 SL, 380 SL, and 500 SL. Under the hood, the 5.6L V8 made it the most powerful SL of its time—until the next-gen R129 SL took over in the ’90s with models like the SL 500 and SL 600. My love for the Mercedes-Benz SL goes way back, starting with the 300 SL Gullwing from the 1950s, the 190 SL roadster, and the legendary W113 "Pagoda" 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL. Then came my 560 SL, a symbol of ’80s success, built like a bank vault. Every SL since—from the R129 SL 320, SL 500, SL 600, and the supercharged SL 55 AMG, to the monstrous SL 65 AMG Black Series—owes something to this classic. In this video, I explain why I chose this specific spec, why I drove it across the country instead of shipping it, and what it’s like to experience an R107 SL on a true American road trip.
