Abbé Pierre, then a member of parliament, who lived in a dilapidated house in Neuilly-Plaisance, near Paris, invited a former convict to help himself by sorting discarded objects. This man would become the first companion of the secular movement, which now numbers 4,000 in France, as well as 5,000 volunteers working in 110 communities.
