Freedom-loving agents of unfreedom, who easily revoked their oath to their masters, baring their sharp sabers. Who are they? Orthodox Caucasians? A subspecies of Little Russians, who have lost track of their origins, crowding everyone around them? Are they Russians or an independent people of fugitives seeking freedom? A hodgepodge of Slavs, Circassians, Turks, Kalmyks? A class or an ethnic group? Crossroads, endless crossroads. The history of the Cossacks is a series of crossroads. Each time, they are forced to decide, if not "who are we?", then "who are we with?" The Cossacks of the Quiet Don were those whose paths and roads converged and diverged with the imperial decree. The Don drama is played out every century, thundering across their homeland—the Don—and the fertile South in the chariots of upheaval, repression, the throes of civil wars and interventions. It is difficult for the highlanders to view the Cossacks as friends and accommodating "compatriots." Much blood was spilled, much was killed, and much sackly plundered by the ancestors of those who established stanitsas (councils) in the auls. But the blood that fertilizes the soil works to firmly bind old, good enemies. Cossackia is a territory that cannot be abolished. Therefore, we must also understand its struggle against the enemy that has tormented us for centuries. This struggle may be situational, as long as it is effective. This film does not answer questions about the Cossack phenomenon. But we are one step closer to understanding the complexities of its recent political history. And to predict whether the Don will be Quiet or whether it will become violent when the clawed winds of the Civil War blow again. There will be no time for crossroads. Cossackia will have to determine its path once and for all.
