But since the child disappeared, the pond began to emit a strange, fishy smell, the water spinach grew thicker, the water turned darker, and a worn conical hat always lurked beneath the water lilies. No one dared mention what happened that rainy night. The adults chose silence, concealment, and to defend the one who deserved to be kept. But the child did not. She returned. Not needing a physical form, not needing to cry. Just needing to stand by the pond, looking down at the place where she had been held captive beneath the cold, muddy bottom. Under the water spinach pond, there are things that seem to have sunk. But guilt remains.
