🎥 Making a Kung Fu Movie Score into a Boom Bap Beat | RAW Flips
Here’s a revised version that incorporates the fact that you sampled it into the MPC and keeps your natural voice. This week on RAW Flips, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to make. I was sitting in the studio watching Enter the Dragon, and instead of paying attention to the fight scenes, I kept getting pulled in by the score. It still blows my mind how good those old Bruce Lee soundtracks were. The more I listened, the more I started thinking about that whole era and how much crossover there was between ’70s kung fu films and the blaxploitation sound. They shared this gritty, cinematic vibe that just doesn’t exist much anymore. That sent me down a rabbit hole. Instead of digging through records, I wanted to see if I could recreate that feeling myself. I wrote a simple melody, used some vintage soundfonts to get that wah-wah guitar flavor, layered a few textures, and kept tweaking it until it sounded like something that could’ve come from an old movie soundtrack. Then I did what I always love doing—I sampled my own composition into the Akai MPC One G2. From there it became just like any other sample. I chopped it, pitched it, rearranged it, and started building the beat piece by piece. That’s one of my favorite creative exercises because once it’s inside the MPC, I stop thinking about how I made it and start treating it like I just found it on a dusty record. People ask me all the time where I find samples. Sometimes the answer is… I make them first. Texture is everything. If you can capture a feeling, the rest usually falls into place. If you’re into beat making, sample chopping, boom bap, movie scores, creating original samples, or the Akai MPC One G2, I think you’ll enjoy this one. Let me know what you think of the beat, and if there’s a movie score or soundtrack you’d like to see me tackle next, drop it in the comments. Thanks for hanging out in the studio with me. 👊
