Le temps de la République CM1 - CM2 - Cycle 3 - Histoire
#republic #learningnation #education #homeschooling #history #cm1 #cm2 #primary #primaryschool #elementary #children #cycle3 #school #historyoffrance This video is aimed at students in CM1 and CM2 (cycle 3). I explain to them what the Republic is, how it came about, and why it is so important in our history. Together, we discover that children didn't always go to school: in the 19th century, many worked in mines, fields, or factories. It was with Jules Ferry, in the 1880s, that school became free, secular, and compulsory for all children. I also show how the Republic was built over time. After several failures and the return of kings and emperors, the Third Republic was established in 1870 and brought about major changes. It was during this period that essential laws were passed: freedom of expression, freedom of worship, the right to assemble, and the creation of unions and associations. I also recall key moments, such as the abolition of slavery in 1848 and the granting of the right to vote for men, then for women in 1944. I take the time to describe the symbols of the Republic that your children encounter every day: the blue, white, and red flag, the motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity," the Marseillaise, the Bastille Day holiday, and Marianne, the symbol of liberty. Through this lesson, I want to show that the Republic is a regime where power belongs to the people, that acquired rights are the result of long struggles, and that they must still be defended today. My advice: To support your child in learning these concepts, I encourage you to discuss them simply with them, as in an everyday conversation. You can ask them what they learned from the video, then ask them to explain in their own words what the Republic means, or why school became compulsory. Rephrasing helps them memorize and understand in depth. It's also possible to make connections with everyday life. For example, when you come across a tricolor flag, a town hall, or a Marianne, take a moment to recall their role and significance. During the news or an event like Bastille Day, you can show them that these symbols and values are still alive today. Finally, don't hesitate to encourage their curiosity. If your child asks questions about liberty, equality, or fraternity, encourage them to give concrete examples of what they observe at school, in their family, or in their neighborhood. The important thing isn't to memorize everything at once, but to help them understand that these concepts are part of their daily lives and have been acquired over time. Learning objectives: – Understand what the Republic is and how it was built in France. – Discover why school became free, secular, and compulsory with Jules Ferry. – Identify the major symbols and values of the French Republic.
