How to Talk About Your Family in Spanish (A1) | Beginners | Podcast | Eng & Esp subtitles
👋 Want to learn how to talk about your family in Spanish — your parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, the whole tree? In this lesson of Español Paso a Paso, Lucía and Javier, two native Spanish teachers from Madrid, walk you through every family vocabulary word you'll actually use in real conversations — plus the possessives (mi, tu, su, nuestro) you need to put them all together. You'll also get a glimpse of how family really works in Spain — why Sunday lunch is sacred, why kids often live with their parents into their late twenties, and why Spanish grandmothers (las abuelas) are basically the secret heart of every family. Clear Spanish with Spanish AND English subtitles burned into the video. 🐢 Still too fast? Tap the ⚙️ settings on the video and slow the playback to 0.75x or 0.5x. Totally normal when you're just starting out. 🔑 THE TRICKY RULE "Los hermanos" doesn't only mean "brothers" — the masculine plural in Spanish includes both genders. So "tengo tres hermanos" can mean three brothers OR two brothers and a sister. Same for los padres (parents), los hijos (children), los tíos (aunts and uncles), los abuelos (grandparents). One word, both genders. You'll learn: ✅ Parents and children — padre / madre / hijo / hija (+ papá / mamá) ✅ Siblings — hermano / hermana ✅ Grandparents — abuelo / abuela (+ the cute forms: abuelito / abuelita) ✅ Extended family — tío, tía, primo, prima, sobrino, sobrina, nieto, nieta ✅ Couple vocabulary — esposo, esposa, marido, mujer, novio, novia, pareja ✅ Possessives — mi, tu, su, nuestro (and why "nuestra familia" uses the feminine) ✅ How to ask about someone's family — ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? ✅ How to describe your own family — Tengo…, Mi familia es…, Mi hermano vive en… ✅ Bonus cultural insight: why Spanish families eat together on Sundays and why abuelas are basically the heart of every Spanish family ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 - Welcome — imagine a Sunday family scene in Spain 1:02 - Parents & children (padre, madre, hijo, hija) 2:19 - Siblings (hermano, hermana) 3:30 - Grandparents & extended family (tíos, primos, sobrinos, nietos) 5:16 - Couples (esposo, esposa, novio, novia, pareja) 6:22 - Possessives (mi, tu, su, nuestro) 7:48 - How to talk about your family 9:48 - Lucía's and Javier's real families 11:13 - Cultural insight: family life in Spain 12:06 - Quick practice 13:10 - Review + subscribe 💬 Tell us in the comments — ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? ¿Cómo se llaman?
