This new solar powered Wifi PTZ security camera from Xega is robustly made, attractively designed, easy to configure and offers very decent video quality along with motion detection and a well designed and simple to use Android and iOS app. In the box are the camera itself, solar panel with hard wired 3m cable, wall fitting kits, Cable Cleat, Charging Cable and a nicely printed and well-written User Guide. Build quality seems fine, the camera feels reassuringly weighty and has an attractive and traditional PTZ design. On the front is the lens with Night Vision LED panel below, motion sensors, spotlight and the microphone opening. On top is a grommet protected panel housing the micro-SD card slot and reset button. On the rear panel, housing the battery are grommet proted ports for the USB-C power in port and the power On/Off switch. There are adjustable Wifi antennas on either side. The camera is rated IP66 weatherproof which means it should be fine with anything short of water immersion. The camera comes with a 3.5w solar panel which attaches to the USB-C port on the rear of the camera with its hard wired 3m cable. One great feature is that the port can also be used to top the battery up from any USB power source. The first thing to do is to download and install the UBOX app. You have to register the app before use but doing so is free and you can use a disposable email address.. There are several installation methods available but I chose to do so over wifi. Take note to ensure the phone used to configure the camera is connected to a 2.4Ghz network, not 5Ghz, which this camera does not support. After installing and registering the app and plugging in the camera follow the in-app instructions to add a new camera. After inputting your home wifi details the app automatically and very quickly sends this to the camera which then connects automatically to the wifi network with on-screen and voice confirmations throughout. This model has a clean 2304x1296@15 FPS image quality which is clearly not the upscaled 720p of some lesser rivals. Video quality from the 355° horizontal and 100° vertical rotating wide-angle lens is one of the best I found for this price bracket although the rather slow frame rate is disappointing. Unlike older budget security cameras, this one boasts an i/r cut filter and a spotlight which when not needed removes the nighttime infrared filter to ensure good colour fidelity daytime images. You can select to use the traditional mono infra-red light to get a flatter and deeper nighttime image. It supports two-way audio which means it serves well as a general-purpose communications Monitor due to the larger and louder than average built-in speaker. Like most rivals, this camera has motion detection but with a faster than normal 0.2 sec trigger time although it lacks motion tracking or target discrimination. The camera has the option to save video and audio within the app as well as to the SD card or to an optional cloud connection. It will default to cloud backup (with a free trial offered) but this can be disabled in the app settings. If you use an SD card (none is provided) make sure you use a Class 10 or better card – the card must be able to cope with the high-speed data stream from the camera otherwise the results will be jittery and poor. A card of up to 128gb can be used. This is a high-quality security camera capable of excellent results. The sub £50 price is fantastic for the features on offer and allows me to overlook the few shortcomings.
