One reason the American Dream eludes immigrant children | Baldomero Chavez | TEDxUNCCharlotte
NOTE: Research around the effects of language brokering on youth well-being remains highly variable and an ongoing field of study. For more context, see the footnotes listed below. First generation immigrant children can experience untold stress when they are expected to be the language broker, retirement planner, and next leader for their family. Baldomero 'Baldy' Chavez explores the experiences of first generation immigrant children and the barriers that can exist for immigrant families. By embracing the diversity that immigrant families bring and expanding community centers, Baldy believes we can help immigrant children achieve the American Dream. 1:51: Clarification: A 2014 study found that while positive feelings towards language brokering did not predict adverse outcomes, negative feelings towards language brokering could have an indirect effect on behavior. Further research in needed, but more information can be found here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.... 2:15: Clarification: This study found that existing family dynamics likely had a more significant impact on the psychological health of adolescents than language brokering alone. For more information, see here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.... 2:38: Correction: Studies have found highly variable relationships between language brokering and self-esteem. A meta-analysis can be found here: https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2023-0... Baldomero otherwise known as "Baldy" by his friends and peers, is a student at UNC Charlotte studying Operations and Supply Chain management. He served for 6 years in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and has deployed to places like Africa, Europe, and assisted in Operation Allies Welcome for the Afghan refugees. Baldy is the son of two immigrants from Mexico. Baldy is interested in supply chains, community issues within minority groups, and education issues in the country. To battle the issues, he has made the Elmore Brown Leadership Scholarship which awards a school leader in Garinger High School and hopes to bring solutions to the issues around Charlotte and the country. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
