🐝 Honey Bee on Queen Anne’s Lace! 🌼

We spotted a honey bee hard at work in a field of Queen Anne’s Lace, and naturally Michael had to get right in there with the pollinators. Somebody has to supervise the bee staff. Queen Anne’s Lace, also known as wild carrot, is more than just a pretty roadside flower. Its lacy white blooms attract honey bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a useful plant for pollinators during the warmer months. It is also a host plant for eastern black swallowtail caterpillars. Historically, young Queen Anne’s Lace roots have been used like a wild carrot, and the flowers are often used in dried arrangements, natural crafts, and wildflower displays. That said, this plant has some dangerous lookalikes, especially poison hemlock, so never forage or use it unless you are 100% sure of the identification. Pretty flowers are great. Accidental poison salad? Not so much. Queen Anne’s Lace can also spread aggressively in some areas, so it is one of those plants that can be both beautiful and a bit bossy.
