But there was a time when there were no trains, no tracks, and no fast transportation across the country. So how did it all begin? In this video, we take you back to the 19th century — a time when India was under British rule, and everything was changing rapidly. The story of Indian Railways begins during the rule of the British East India Company. The British were looking for faster and more efficient ways to transport raw materials like cotton, coal, and other goods from different parts of India to ports for export. At the same time, they also needed a reliable system to move troops quickly across regions to maintain control over the country. That’s when the idea of railways in India was born. The very first passenger train in India ran on 16 April 1853, marking a historic moment. This train started from Bori Bunder (now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and traveled to Thane. The total distance was about 34 kilometers, and the journey was completed in around 57 minutes. This first train had 14 carriages and was pulled by three steam locomotives named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan. It carried around 400 passengers and was a huge success. People were amazed to see such a powerful machine moving on iron tracks, something they had never witnessed before. At first, the railways were built mainly to serve British interests. They helped in transporting goods quickly and boosting trade. But over time, railways started benefiting the common people of India as well. Travel became easier, faster, and more affordable. People could now visit distant cities, meet family members, and explore new places without spending days or weeks on the road. The expansion of railways in India happened rapidly. By the late 19th century, railway lines had spread across major parts of the country, connecting important cities, towns, and ports. This not only improved transportation but also helped in the growth of industries, agriculture, and communication. Railways also played an important role in shaping India’s social and cultural landscape. People from different regions, languages, and cultures started interacting more frequently. This increased unity and awareness among the population. However, the railway system during British rule was not perfect. It was primarily designed to benefit the British economy. Many Indian resources were exploited, and profits were taken out of the country. Still, the infrastructure that was built became a strong foundation for the future. After India gained independence in 1947, the railway network came under the control of the Indian government and was reorganized into what we now know as Indian Railways. Since then, it has grown tremendously. Today, Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world. It operates thousands of trains daily, covering more than 68,000 kilometers of track. It connects remote villages to big cities and plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. Modern Indian trains are far more advanced than the early steam engines. We now have electric trains, high-speed trains, metro systems, and even semi-high-speed trains like Vande Bharat Express. Technology has completely transformed the way people travel. From a single railway line between Mumbai and Thane to a massive nationwide network, the journey of Indian Railways is truly inspiring.
