What's it like to visit Derbyshire?
Derbyshire tends to sit in the shadow of the Cotswolds and the Lake District when people plan a trip to England. It should not. Few counties pack in this much: grand stately homes, wild Peak District scenery, a proper spa town, and villages that were building England's postcard image long before the Cotswolds claimed it. 0:00 Welcome to the Derbyshire Peak District 0:30 Chatsworth House 3:04 Haddon Hall 4:11 Bakewell 4:54 Ashford-in-the-Water 5:34 The Monsal Trail 6:21 Winnats Pass and Blue John Stone 6:59 New Mills and Derbyshire's Industrial Past 7:50 Buxton 8:53 Castleton and Mam Tor In this video I spend a few days working through the county, starting at Chatsworth House, one of the biggest houses in England and home to the Duke of Devonshire, before moving on to Haddon Hall, a medieval and Tudor manor house that has doubled as a film set for Jane Eyre and Wolf Hall. From there it's Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, the Monsal Trail, Winnats Pass and the Blue John seams at Treak Cliff, the industrial heritage of New Mills, the spa town of Buxton, and Castleton and Mam Tor to finish. In this video I cover: Chatsworth House : Basically a palace, 300 rooms, one of the UK's most important art collections, and the trompe l'oeil violin hidden behind a door Haddon Hall : a medieval and Tudor manor house used as a film set for Jane Eyre and Wolf Hall, with The Peacock at Rowsley nearby as its former Dowager House Bakewell : home to the Rutland Arms Hotel and the Old House Museum, with its Tudor and First World War battery history Ashford-in-the-Water : a picturesque Derbyshire village, and once voted the best place in England to play Poohsticks The Monsal Trail : a traffic-free former railway line, accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs Winnats Pass and Treak Cliff Cavern : one of the only places in the world to find Blue John stone New Mills : the Millennium Walkway, cantilevered above the River Goyt Buxton : a Georgian and Victorian spa town, with bathing dating back to Roman times Castleton and Mam Tor : finishing with one of the most popular walks in the Peak District For the full guide to Derbyshire, including where to stay, visit theeuropeancompass.com/derbyshire-england-travel-guide/
