The Royal Thai Army was established as a modern army in 1874. Its first Chief of Staff was General Prince Damrong Rajanubhap (his title at the time), who held the position for three years. Later, the title was changed to Department of the Army, Department of Military Affairs, Minister of Defence, and finally Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
