Prof Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed now takes up the issue of Princely States at the time of Partition in 1947. The Princely State of Bahawalpur was overwhelmingly Muslim and its territories were within what became Pakistan but on the border between India and Pakistan. Unlike some of the princely states in East Punjab where Muslims were killed in large numbers the Hindu and Sikh subjects of Bahawalpur State could leave for India safely. This was because the Nawab of Bahawalpur and instructed that they should not be attacked and if they wanted they could leave Bahawalpur safely.
