Roman Kantserov Is OFFICIALLY Coming To The Chicago Blackhawks & Ilya Mikheyev Is Likely GONE
The Chicago Blackhawks just had a major weekend of offseason news, and this episode of Just Another Year: Blackhawks is breaking down all of it. First, it is officially official: Roman Kantserov has signed his Entry-Level Contract with the Blackhawks and is coming over from the KHL to North America. This is not just another prospect update. Kantserov was drafted by Chicago in the second round, 44th overall, in the 2023 NHL Draft, and now joins the organization after a monster season with Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He led the entire KHL with 36 goals and added 28 assists for 64 points in 63 games. Those 36 goals and 64 points were the most ever in a single KHL season by a player under the age of 22. He also added 8 points in 15 playoff games. For a Blackhawks team still looking for more offense around Connor Bedard, this matters. Kantserov brings speed, skill, creativity, and a true attacking mindset. He can create off the rush, make plays with the puck, and gives Chicago another young scoring winger with legitimate top-six upside. The Blackhawks are trying to build waves of talent around Bedard, Frank Nazar, Anton Frondell, Sacha Boisvert, Oliver Moore, Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker, and the next generation of prospects. Kantserov officially joining that group makes the future forward mix even more exciting. But the second topic is less fun. According to reporting discussed by Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts, the Blackhawks have made Ilya Mikheyev’s negotiating rights available for trade after the two sides failed to make meaningful progress on an extension. That likely means Mikheyev’s time in Chicago is coming to an end. And honestly, that stings. Mikheyev was a useful player for the Blackhawks. He scored 18 goals and 36 points in 77 games this past season, setting a career high in points. He also played tough defensive minutes, killed penalties, and helped drive one of the best penalty kills in the NHL. He is fast, responsible, reliable at 5-on-5, valuable on the penalty kill, and good enough offensively to matter. But if Chicago cannot re-sign him before he hits unrestricted free agency on July 1, Kyle Davidson has to try to get something back. That brings us to the trade idea. To be clear, this part is opinion and speculation, not reporting. Nobody has reported this exact deal. This is just the move I would try if I were the Blackhawks. The realistic market for Mikheyev’s rights is probably a contender or cap-flexible team looking for a fast, defensively responsible middle-six winger. The return will not be huge because he is so close to free agency, but something is still better than nothing. My proposal: trade Mikheyev’s negotiating rights for a conditional 2026 draft pick. Make it a 2026 seventh-round pick that upgrades to a sixth-rounder if the acquiring team signs him before July 1. That protects the other team if Mikheyev walks, while still giving Chicago a chance to turn an expiring asset into a draft pick. Is a sixth or seventh-rounder exciting? Not really. But this is how smart rebuilding teams operate. You convert expiring assets into lottery tickets whenever you can. Kantserov is coming in. Mikheyev is probably going out. And the Blackhawks’ offseason is only getting started. What should Chicago do with Mikheyev’s rights? Would you take a conditional late-round pick, or should the Blackhawks push for more?
