Though it consists of only ten short verses, it presents the very heart of Advaita Vedānta in a remarkably clear and powerful manner. Every verse is filled with profound wisdom, guiding the seeker from ignorance to the direct knowledge of the Self. The central teaching of the Daśaślokī is simple yet revolutionary: our true identity is not the body, the mind, the senses, or the ego. We are the eternal Ātman—the pure, changeless Consciousness—which is none other than the Supreme Brahman. The world of names, forms, and countless experiences appears real because of Māyā, but the ultimate Reality is the one, indivisible Self that shines in all beings. This teaching echoes the great declarations of the Upaniṣads, which proclaim that the one who realizes the Self rises above all sorrow, fear, and bondage. As the Upaniṣads declare: "Ātmavit tarati śokam" — The knower of the Self crosses beyond all sorrow. After composing profound works such as his celebrated commentary on Gauḍapādācārya's Kārikā on the Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad and the philosophical masterpiece Upadeśa Sāhasrī, many scholars regard the Daśaślokī as one of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's most direct and concise statements on the non-dual nature of Reality. In these ten verses, he explains the nature of the Self as eternal, attributeless, indestructible, self-luminous, ever-pure, ever-free, and the very source of infinite peace and bliss. Swami Gambhirananda beautifully describes the greatness of this work: "This text deals with the nature of the Ātman in the clearest and simplest language. There is not a single word that is superfluous. The teacher, Śaṅkara, is at his very best. The arrow of knowledge is aimed directly at ignorance, and it strikes the target unfailingly." The Birth of the Daśaślokī The origin of the Daśaślokī is as inspiring as its teachings. As a young boy, Śaṅkara was once caught by a crocodile while bathing in the River Pūrṇā near his native village of Kāladi. Believing that death was imminent, he sought his mother's permission to embrace Sannyāsa (the monastic life). Upon receiving her consent, he mentally accepted the vows of renunciation. Remarkably, the crocodile immediately released him. Although he had inwardly become a renunciate, Śaṅkara knew that the traditional monastic order required formal initiation by a realized Guru. Determined to follow the sacred tradition, he journeyed north in search of such a Master. His search ended on the banks of the holy River Narmadā, where he found the great sage Śrī Govindapādācārya, immersed in deep meditation inside a cave. When Śaṅkara respectfully approached the Master, Govindapādācārya opened his eyes and asked a seemingly simple question: "Who are you?" To an ordinary person, this might appear to be an easy question. But to a true seeker of Truth, it is the deepest spiritual inquiry. Śaṅkara did not answer by giving his name, family, caste, birthplace, or social identity. Instead, from the depths of Self-realization, he spontaneously composed ten extraordinary verses revealing the true nature of the Self. These verses became known as the Daśaślokī. Hearing these profound declarations, Govindapādācārya immediately recognized that Śaṅkara was no ordinary seeker but a realized soul. He formally initiated him into the ancient monastic order and accepted him as his disciple, thus preserving the sacred Guru–Śiṣya tradition. Why the Daśaślokī Matters Today Even after more than twelve centuries, the Daśaślokī remains as relevant as ever. In a world filled with constant change, anxiety, and distraction, these ten verses remind us of an unchanging Truth within ourselves. They invite us to look beyond our temporary identities and discover our real nature—the limitless, ever-free, ever-blissful Consciousness that is untouched by birth, death, pleasure, pain, success, or failure. The Daśaślokī is not merely a philosophical composition. It is a practical guide to Self-discovery, an invitation to enquire, "Who am I?" and to realize the eternal Truth that has always been our own Self. May the wisdom of Jagadguru Ādi Śaṅkarācārya remove the darkness of ignorance, awaken true Self-knowledge, and lead every sincere seeker from the unreal to the Real, from darkness to Light, and from the cycle of sorrow to everlasting peace. Om Tat Sat.
