In W., a bridge is being built for €1.6 million. The colossal structure has only one purpose: to provide a flight path for bats. "They don't need a bridge – they fly!" "Why should they fly over it instead of around it?" – the residents of W. demand an explanation. "We feel completely ripped off," says resident Nina G., standing bewildered before the new concrete arch in the middle of her dog-walking path. The responsible Lower Saxony State Office for Road Construction and Transport writes to us: "There is no guarantee regarding the behavior of individual animals in nature."
