San Juan Puerto Rico Cruise Port Guide | Best Things to Do in Old San Juan
Visit the port guide: https://www.nowgoseeit.com/blog/cruis... Planning a cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico or stopping here for a port day? This video shows how to spend one full day in Old San Juan with a route that works well for cruise passengers who want real sightseeing, major historic attractions, good food, and practical logistics without wasting time. We start with one of the most important things to know before visiting San Juan by cruise ship: there are 2 different cruise terminal setups. The San Juan Bay terminal is the easier one for Old San Juan sightseeing because it is close to the historic district. The Pan American pier, which is the one we used, is across the bay, so you will need a taxi, Uber, or shuttle to get into Old San Juan. Once you understand that, the day gets much easier to plan because most of the top things to do in San Juan are concentrated inside Old San Juan. In this San Juan cruise port guide, we visit some of the city’s most important and most memorable attractions, including the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, where you can see the tomb of Ponce de León, the preserved body of Saint Pius, and one of the oldest and most significant churches in the Western Hemisphere. We also stop at Capilla del Santo Cristo de la Salud and explain the famous horse-over-the-cliff story that gives this small chapel one of the best legends in Old San Juan. Right next to the chapel, we visit Parque de las Palomas, one of the easiest and most fun quick stops in the city, with bird feeding, bay views, and a great look at the edge of the old walled city. For lunch, we head to Chocobar Cortés, one of the most unique restaurants in Old San Juan, where chocolate shows up in drinks, desserts, and savory dishes. Then we continue up Calle del Cristo, through Plaza San Juan, and into Ballajá Barracks and Museo de las Américas for more context on the Indigenous, African, Spanish, Caribbean, and American influences that shaped Puerto Rico. The second half of the day focuses on San Juan National Historic Site, one of the main reasons Old San Juan is such a strong cruise stop. We explore Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the best-known fort in Puerto Rico, with its huge lawn, entrance gate, yellow interior courtyard, cannon displays, barracks, lighthouse, and those stone bastions that instantly say San Juan. We also visit Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, one of the most photographed places in the city, and then continue to Castillo San Cristóbal, the massive land-defense fort where you can walk through tunnels, casemates, ramps, and some of the most impressive military architecture in the Caribbean. From there, we head to Puerta de San Juan, follow the shoreline path along the old walls, stop at the Roots Fountain, walk Paseo de la Princesa, browse the souvenir stalls, pass through Calle de la Fortaleza, and finish at Plaza Colón before heading back to the Pan American pier to board the ship. This video is for cruise passengers visiting San Juan before a cruise, after a cruise, or during a port day. It is also useful for anyone planning one day in Old San Juan and wanting a realistic route that combines history, food, walking, and major attractions. San Juan is one of the best cruise cities in the Caribbean because it gives you real substance in a compact area. The forts are famous for a reason, the historic core is easy to explore on foot, and the city gives you much more than a quick shopping stop near the ship. Watch for practical tips throughout the video, including how the 2-port setup affects your day, what makes each stop worth your time, and why San Juan works so well for independent sightseeing. We also cover historical details that help explain what you are seeing, so the forts, churches, plazas, and waterfront paths feel like more than just pretty backdrops.
