I Recorded a Jazz Trio — This Was My Approach

Hey and welcome to YMI-Records. Last week I released a live jazz session with the Kris Stipsich Trio — and in this video I take you behind the scenes of that production. I’ll walk you through the idea behind the session, from the visual concept and lighting setup to the audio recording and mixing approach inside my Logic session. For me, it’s not about building something from scratch. It’s about capturing a performance as honestly as possible — and supporting what is already there. You’ll hear the instruments one by one, take a closer look at the room sound, and get an insight into how everything comes together in the mix. A big thanks to the band for the music and to Silas for his help with the camera work. If you enjoyed the session, this gives you a deeper look into the process behind it. ---------- Credits: Original Composition: Idle Moments Composed by: Duke Pearson Performed by: Kris Stipsich Trio Guitar: Kris Stipsich Bass: Nico Fischer Drums: Thorsten Seidl Recorded at: YMI-Records Video Production: Silas Pross Audio Mastering: Stefan Gienger Light Design: YMI-Records Post Production: YMI-Records ---------- 00:00 Intro 00:26 Concept & Visual Idea 01:10 Camera Setup 01:38 Audio Recording Approach 02:07 Room Sound / Big Picture 02:58 Guitar Sound 04:36 Drums & Overheads 05:47 Wurst Mic & Parallel Compression 06:50 Bass Sound 07:54 Mixing Approach 08:23 Outro
