She has never forgiven him for what he did to her, or to Cuba. But hatred is not so easily worn as a badge. Through her journey, we see her in her Miami home, in the bars of Little Havana, at a Cuban radio station, and in the quiet solace of her yoga class. At the same time, we travel back to the places of her childhood in Cuba—her old home, the ballet school where she once dreamed of a different future. There, we meet her former teacher, who offers another perspective on the woman she became. The film reaches its climax in both Miami and Havana, as Fidel Castro’s death finally arrives. Mourning and celebration collide in the streets. And in the middle of it all stands Alina—a daughter, an exile, and a woman forever divided between the past and the present.
