#switch #electrical #repair How is lighting organized in long hallways or stairways? When you flip a switch at the entrance, the light turns on, and then at the other end of the hallway, you flip a different switch? These switches are called pass-through switches; when paired, they act as a single switch with two control points. Today, you'll understand the intricacies of connecting pass-through switches and be able to install this electrical innovation yourself. We'll first look at a well-known wiring diagram for pass-through switches, and then you'll learn another diagram that's more convenient for stairways or courtyards. A pass-through switch looks almost identical to a regular switch; it has a single key, but the trick is in the contacts. It has two electrical terminals on one side, and another on the other. Let's try testing the contacts. This device is more accurately called a switch. When we press a button, we open one circuit and close another. This is the basis for the whole trick of turning on the lighting. The display shows a mock-up of a wiring diagram for pass-through switches. One light bulb is connected, but there could be several connected in parallel. A cable from the light bulb goes to the junction box. The power cable from the electrical panel also comes here. Three-wire cables from the junction box also run to the pass-through switches. Now let's look at how to connect the cable to the pass-through switch. I'll connect the white wire to the common terminal on one side. And I'll connect the blue and yellow-green wires to the terminals on the other side of the switch. I install the switch in place and secure it. The second switch is connected in the same way. So, all the equipment is installed; all that remains is to properly connect the wires in the junction box. We won't connect the protective ground wire for now; we'll move it aside. We immediately connect the neutral wire of the power cable to the corresponding wire going to the light bulb. We connect the incoming live wire to the white wire going to one of the switches. We connect the white wire coming from the light bulb to the white wire going to the second switch. We have four wires remaining: two blue and two yellow-green. We'll do it simply – yellow-green to yellow-green, but the circuit will still work if we mix up these wires. I apply voltage. A person enters the hallway and turns on the light. They walk to the end of the hallway and turn the light off. And so everything will work in any order and as many times as necessary. Well, now here's another circuit, which is suitable for places where the first one is not very convenient to install. For example, on staircases, where switches and lamps are at different levels. This circuit allows for a sequential connection of devices. Let's look at the circuit layout on the stand. A cable comes from the electrical panel to the junction box. From there, a cable goes to the light fixtures. Another cable goes to the first switch in the line. And the cable to the second switch comes from the first switch. In the junction box, we connect the neutral wire to the neutral wire of the light bulb, as usual. We connect the hot wire to the white wire going to the first switch. And the blue wire coming from the first switch is connected to the white wire going to the light bulb. And we connect the second switch exactly as in the previous diagram: white to the common contact, and blue and yellow-green to the opposite contacts. Now the first switch. We connect the white, hot wire from the junction box to the common (single) contact of the switch. And we connect the blue and yellow-green wires going to the second switch to the opposite terminals. Let me repeat: the white wire from the box is connected to a single terminal, and the blue and yellow-green wires leading to the second switch are connected to the other terminals. And the white wire coming from the second switch is connected to the blue wire going to the junction box. This yellow-green wire is not used. Close the switch. Apply power. The circuit works exactly the same as the previous one; the lighting can be controlled from two points.
