This short documentary traces its incredible history—from its role in the 1879 premiere of Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77 by Joseph Joachim, likely on this very instrument, to its continued legacy in inspiring virtuosos today. Featuring an exclusive performance of Brahms’s concerto by violinist Charlie Siem, this film brings the story of the Joachim-Ma to life. Crafted in 1714 by the legendary Antonio Stradivari during his renowned “Golden Period,” this violin has connected generations of musicians. In 1967, it was acquired by Si-Hon Ma, an accomplished violinist and New England Conservatory alumnus, who studied under one of Joachim’s pupils. Ma played this extraordinary instrument until his passing in 2009, when his estate donated it to NEC with the vision of creating transformative opportunities for young musicians. Now, as the highlight of Sotheby’s New York’s Masters Week, the Joachim-Ma Stradivarius will be auctioned live on 7 February at 11:15 AM EST. Proceeds from the sale will establish the largest named scholarship fund in NEC’s history, ensuring this violin continues to inspire future generations of artistry and innovation.
