In this video, we explore Bode plots, one of the most powerful and intuitive representations of systems theory and electronics. Starting from the impulse response of a linear, time-invariant system, we introduce the transfer function as a Laplace transform of the impulse response and see how it fully captures the dynamic behavior of the system. We then move on to the harmonic response, obtained by restricting the transfer function to the imaginary axis (s = j omega), to understand what happens when a system is traversed by sinusoids of different frequencies. We will discover that a linear system does not create new frequencies, but can amplify, attenuate, and shift them. From here, we introduce the Bode form, i.e., the decomposition of the transfer function into elementary blocks: constant gains, poles and zeros at the origin, real poles and zeros, and second-order trinomial terms associated with pairs of complex conjugate poles and zeros. For each term, we analyze the contribution to the magnitude and phase, the asymptotic slopes in dB/decade, the meaning of the characteristic pulsations, and the role of damping and resonance.
