USS S-4: America Sank Its Own Submarine — 6 Men Tapped Morse Code For 72 Hours Before Falling Silent
USS S-4: America Sank Its Own Submarine — 6 Men Tapped Morse Code For 72 Hours Before Falling Silent On December 17, 1927, USS S-4 was rammed and sunk off Provincetown, Massachusetts by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter during a routine training exercise. Forty men died. But in the torpedo room, six men survived the initial flooding and sealed themselves inside. For seventy-two hours they tapped Morse code through the hull while rescue divers worked above them in brutal winter seas. The navy knew they were alive. The weather wouldn't let anyone reach them in time. The tapping eventually stopped.
