They were sent here, at the request of the blessed memory of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, by their highest superiors, to initiate perhaps the greatest work in the history of our modern Church - the formation of a new congregation for preaching the word of God and missionary service to the broad masses. The arriving monks settled near Yaktoriv, ​​in the glorious Univ Castle, which for centuries was the residence of the Lviv metropolitans. In the history of the Ukrainian people, this once quite famous Basilian monastery in Univ occupies a prominent place. Throughout its existence, it was a powerful center of material and spiritual wealth for the Ukrainian people and at the same time a powerful fortress that often defended the population from Tatar raids. The inhabitants of Unev treated the castle with deep respect and a certain fear. The fact is that this glorious monastery, although neglected for decades, still had residents, and reliable stories about strange appearances that were observed in the monastery were spread among people... One evening, three monks entered the church located in the inner courtyard of the monastery, and when they left, not a trace of them remained. There are many similar cases; there were also witnesses to those strange events. It must be admitted that this monastery seems to have been created for mysterious stories. Located among large forests, it is still surrounded by huge trees. Owls and crows nest in the church towers, and at midnight, breaking the wind, frantic cries are heard. We spent the first months of our life in Western Ukraine in such an atmosphere. Soon the war began. The victorious Moscow army entered Unev on August 28, 1914. They immediately began to imprison and search for Ukrainians. They also compiled lists of Galicians and all "enemies". Orthodox priests were "planted" in many churches, and handfuls of rubles were scattered among traitors. Spies were roaming around the monastery. In Unev, I was visited by two envoys of the Petrograd "Holy Synod" - the Lviv governor, Count Bobrinsky, who ordered us to leave Galicia, and Evlogii, the Orthodox bishop, with several apostates and the Peremyshlyan commandant, who swore to destroy us... Each new day brought new trials, and no help, advice, or support. Once, on October 29, 1914, more than ever, I was haunted by sad premonitions. It was in the evening. I went out for a short walk under the tall spruces of the monastery park. The wind was howling in the yard, and my mood was gloomy. The events of the last few weeks came to mind. My plans for the revival of the Ukrainian people and work among its disunited sons were shattered... I walked slowly and sadly under the large trees and listened to the creaking of their branches, which the wind played with.
