Its aim is therefore to master a technique for finding the answer to a written multiplication problem. In this video, I explain the technique of single-digit written multiplication, an essential concept in elementary school mathematics. I begin by reminding students that multiplication is the repeated addition of the same number: for example, 35 x 4 means adding 35 four times, or adding 4 thirty-five times. I then demonstrate how to correctly set up a multiplication problem: the digits must be aligned by placing the units digit under the units digit, the tens digit under the tens digit, and the hundreds digit under the hundreds digit. I recommend writing one digit per square on graph paper to ensure proper alignment. I also suggest placing the largest number at the top to simplify the calculation. I explain the calculation technique step by step, always starting with the units digit. I detail the importance of carrying over, which must be clearly noted and not forgotten in subsequent calculations. I provide two detailed examples: 571 x 5 and 463 x 6, showing each time how to handle carrying over and how to write the final result. And this lesson: https://maitrelucas.fr/lecons/les-mul... My advice: Multiplication is part of everyday life, and you can take many opportunities to practice it naturally with your child. For example, when shopping, ask them to calculate the total price of several identical items, or when you're cooking together, have them calculate the quantities of ingredients when you double a recipe. Memorizing multiplication tables is essential for mastering long multiplication. You can help your child review them during car rides by playing "multiplication ping-pong," where you give a calculation and they give the answer. Waiting times, such as at the doctor's office or on public transport, are also good opportunities for these fun little exercises. For long multiplication, encourage your child to verbalize the steps of their calculation. If they make a mistake, let them finish their reasoning before going over the calculation with them to identify where the error came from. The important thing is that they understand the process rather than immediately getting the right answer. The way the calculation is presented is crucial. You can suggest that your child use a graph paper notebook for practice, encouraging them to write one digit per square. This habit will help them align their calculations correctly and avoid careless mistakes. Don't hesitate to praise their progress and celebrate their successes, even small ones. If your child is experiencing persistent difficulties, you can talk to their teacher to develop appropriate strategies together. Skills: Correctly place numbers in long multiplication. Know and implement a long multiplication algorithm.
