Panic as shooting erupts near military convoy, no injuries reported
(28 Sep 2013) Police say they are investigating a shooting near a military convoy in the main city of India-administered Kashmir amid tense expectations for peace talks between India and Pakistan. Soldiers were positioning themselves at the roadside and near the site of the shootout in the city of Srinagar. It was not immediately clear if the shots fired on Saturday came from two men riding a motorcycle past the convoy, or from patrolling street officers who suspected the men were militants. No casualties were reported. Abdul Gani Mir, Inspector General of Police in Kashmir confirmed that at 12:30 local time (06:30 GMT) they were informed that gunshots were being heard in Srinagar. "There are deployments over here there are deployments for ROP (Road Operating Party) and we are investigating what exactly happened," Abdul Gani Mir added. Police Director General Ashok Prasad also said authorities cordoned off the area and are investigating. Rebels have been fighting Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan territory since 1989, and on Thursday stormed a police station and an army camp in Jammu region, sparking a gun battle that left 13 dead. The prime ministers of India and Pakistan, which have fought two wars over Kashmir, are meeting Saturday in Washington, DC. India and Pakistan, which have fought two wars over Kashmir, both claim the territory in its entirety while governing parts of it. Relations have been particularly tense since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, blamed on Pakistan-based militants, which killed 164 people in India's commercial hub. On Sunday, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif plan to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
