Martha's Vineyard in August: A Legacy of Black Excellence In Work and Play
Every August, Martha’s Vineyard becomes a powerful expression of Black excellence, a place where Black history, culture, and achievements are not just acknowledged but celebrated. As a Black woman, stepping onto the island in the height of summer feels like reclaiming space, honoring our roots, and being unapologetically proud of who we are. Oak Bluffs, in particular, holds deep meaning. It’s more than just a beautiful seaside town — it's a sanctuary where Black families, some for generations, have found a sense of belonging and ownership. Walking through the streets, you feel the energy of our ancestors who came here to relax, connect, and thrive at a time when much of the world didn’t welcome us. Today, that legacy continues as we gather to build on their dreams. In August, Martha’s Vineyard pulses with intellectual conversations, celebrations of art, and discussions about the future we’re creating for ourselves and our children. From the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, where Black stories are showcased with the depth and beauty they deserve, to the art galleries, panel discussion, networking events and parties, you can feel the pride in the air as we gather to see ourselves, our lives, and our truths reflected on screen, in the conversation, in the music, in the food and in the deals we negotiate. It’s a space where we don’t just consume culture; we are the culture. Martha’s Vineyard in August isn’t just a vacation — it’s a pilgrimage. It’s where we can be surrounded by other Black professionals, creatives, and leaders who are pushing boundaries and breaking ceilings. We come together not just to rest but to affirm that we are more than what society often tells us. We are creators, visionaries, and trailblazers. And on that island, we celebrate all of it with our heads held high, knowing we belong.
