In 1921, the French designer Gabrielle Chanel decided to undertake a new revolution beyond the women's wardrobe with the launch of the fragrance, contained in a geometric bottle with a simple black and white label. The designer wanted to distinguish herself from the naturalistic and floral tradition of the 19th century and create a fragrance with the "smell of a woman," like a haute couture dress. To achieve this, she enlisted the help of perfumer Ernest Beaux. The pair strayed from traditional florals and embarked on a journey through artificially produced scents. Coco Chanel – as Gabrielle became known worldwide – wanted a bespoke perfume, just like the dresses she designed. Beaux, on the other hand, brought the emotional memory of rivers and lakes under the midnight sun. This is because the perfumer had served in the Russian army and, during his experience, was able to observe the natural phenomenon of the polar sun. Thus was born Chanel Nº5, a fragrance that does not reproduce any perfume found in nature.
