The renovation of the central station is part of the megaproject for the modernization of the railway area in Plovdiv and includes the construction of a communication and transport breakthrough under the railway area of the Plovdiv station under the Project "Development of the Plovdiv railway junction" and the modernization of the railway, contact network and signaling systems and telecommunications at Plovdiv station. In addition to the replacement of the rails, a car tunnel is being built under the station, and the Concrete Bridge will soon be dismantled and a new one, one and a half meters higher, will be built. This is done in order for electric trains to pass under the facility without having to remove the pantographs, as is the case at present. While the new bridge is being built, train traffic through Central Station will be completely stopped. According to a preliminary forecast, this will happen in about 30-40 days. Passengers will be transferred to nearby stations, and some trains will have changed routes. Due to significant changes in the movement of trains through Plovdiv station, the international high-speed train from Sofia to Istanbul will run on an alternative route through Stolnik - Karlovo - Tulovo - Stara Zagora, instead of through Plovdiv. A newly appointed fast train will travel along the route of the international train from Sofia to Plovdiv to serve travelers in this direction. Complete completion of construction activities in the Plovdiv station area is expected in the first half of 2025.
