In a village that has been suffering from a famine for seven years, Geum-bun, who was sold to a wealthy family, was carrying cold rice at her in-laws' house to feed her younger siblings back home in abject poverty when she was caught by her wicked mother-in-law, Mrs. Heo, and her husband, Seong-gyun. As a result, she was deprived of even the meager meals she had been getting. Her kind-hearted brother-in-law, Seong-san, felt sorry for her plight but was helpless. Suffering from extreme hunger to the point of eyeing even the dog's food bowl, Geum-bun suddenly died after digging up and eating raw potatoes in a potato field. When she died suddenly, Mrs. Heo and Seong-gyun forcibly dragged her younger sister, Eun-bun, to work as a maid, claiming it was the payment for the rice they had given Geum-bun's father when he brought her home. Geum-bun, having starved to death, became a gluttonous ghost and wandered into the in-laws' kitchen, but no matter how much she ate, her hunger would not disappear... Eun-bun mourned as she watched the spirit of her sister. Meanwhile, Seong-gyun, who harbored ill intentions toward Eun-bun, feigns illness and stays home alone on the day his entire family goes to the eldest son's house to perform ancestral rites. Seong-gyun attempts to rape Eun-bun while no one is around. At this, Geum-bun's spirit transforms into her younger sister, Eun-bun, and confronts Seong-gyun. Mistaking Geum-bun's spirit for Eun-bun, Seong-gyun gives her the provisions from the storehouse as she demands. Meanwhile, Geum-bun's spirit feeds her alcoholic father and her hungry younger siblings. Her younger brother, Seong-san, who misunderstands that Eun-bun is having an affair with Seong-gyun, sets out on the path to the civil service examination in despair. As the grain in Gwang-an gradually dwindles, Lady Heo suspects Eun-bun and subjects her to severe torture. In response, Geum-bun's spirit causes a group of gluttonous spirits to enter the bodies of Lady Heo and Seong-gyun. Driven insane by these spirits, Lady Heo and Seong-gyun become insatiably gluttonous, and eventually, the house falls into ruin. Around this time, Seongsan, having passed the civil service examination and returned home, sees this state of affairs and seeks a solution. The spirit of Geumbun appears before Seongsan and confesses the circumstances of the past. She also instructs him to bury the bodies of the gluttonous spirits who starved to death while working as tenant farmers for Heo, and to appease their vengeful spirits through Buddhist rituals. When Seongsan promises to obey, the gluttonous spirits leave the bodies of Heo and Seonggyun, and the two regain their senses. Geumbun's spirit earnestly pleads with her alcoholic father to come to his senses, asks Seongsan to look after Eunbun, and then disappears.
