Austria won’t follow Sweden and Finland into NATO | On the Record

"The world needs neutral countries, too." Sebastian Kurz, a former Austrian chancellor once hailed as a conservative wonder child in European politics, tells host Adam Jasser that despite the grim security situation in Europe in the face of Russian belligerence, Austria will not follow formerly neutral Finland and Sweden into NATO. Kurz argues that Austria can cooperate with NATO in other ways as the security situation worsens due to Vladimir Putin's refusal to accept the American peace plan in Ukraine. He argues Putin is to blame for prolonging the conflict. Kurz, who shot to prominence in 2015 with a tough stance on mass immigration into Europe, says that despite a change in rhetoric, EU countries are not doing enough to control the bloc's external borders against illegal entry and manipulation of the asylum system. "The idea of a European Union without internal borders is a great one. But this idea only works out if you have strong external borders, and we are still not there yet."
