On the 31st of October 2014, 20-year-old Shaun Ritchie left his home in Fraserburgh and travelled with friends to a remote farmhouse near Strichen in Aberdeenshire. He was last seen running from the farmhouse into nearby woodland that night and was reported missing two days later. In the days after Shaun’s disappearance, an extensive search was mounted; including ground teams, specialist search dogs, dive units and aerial searches and some of his clothing (a hooded top, trainers and a belt) were recovered from boggy ground near the farmhouse several days later. The investigation has included specialist forensic assistance: police say they were helped by forensic soil and geoscience experts during searches. Shaun’s family have repeatedly appealed for information; his father offered a reward in 2015 and the family have taken part in media appeals and a 2021 documentary which unearthed further claims about events that night.
