Our Canadian road trip on Vancouver Island was themed "Bears, Orcas, Whales, and Forest Fires." Well, the forest fires weren't exactly part of the plan, which did throw our stay on Vancouver Island into disarray. The main goal of our road trip on Vancouver Island was clear: wildlife viewing. Bears and whales, preferably orcas, were our targets. These are supposed to be visible year-round around Vancouver Island. While some bears seemed to be just waiting for us to finally set foot on Vancouver Island and show themselves to us, the orcas weren't quite so eager to see us. Our whale watching tour in Victoria ended with only a sighting of a humpback whale. Nice, but we'd seen them before. Luckily, we got a second chance a few days later in Anacortes, USA... We found Vancouver Island incredibly beautiful. The island is huge; you could easily spend a week exploring it. We spent most of our time in the region around Tofino in the west of the island and in Victoria in the south.
