How Do Dancers Improvise in Partner Dancing? West Coast Swing Improv Training

This dance is 100% improvised, to a song we had never heard before by choosing random on a new Spotify playlist I found. It was the end of a packed training day, where we had been learning/revising/refining technique - we had 2 dances before this, but were both in our head, thinking about what we'd been training. So we decided to have another dance. Right before we started we said to clear our minds, don't think, just focus on the music, each other and our own body.. To FEEL instead of THINKING. A technique we call 'Dancing as One' where Music, Partners & Our Own Bodies work together equally. It's challenging to get to that point - because it's very easy to focus on only one or two things at once. It's so easy to be thinking as well while you dance. Thinking about what to lead... thinking about how to style through movement, thinking about so many techniques as they come up. But dance is about feeling. Feeling the music. Feeling your own body move. Feeling the connection and partners movement. I loved this dance for that reason. It's not perfect - we're amatuer dancers. But we attained our goal - Dancing as One. That's what made this dance so great in the moment. We'd pushed out the distractions and were able to give our attention to the partnership and music. I hope you enjoyed watching.
