#Thailand #train #sukhothai The 29km branch line to Sawankhalok connects the town with the main Northern Line at Ban Dara and was opened in 1910 having been built by German engineers. It was originally going to be standard gauge (1435mm) but was later changed to meter gauge so it could connect with the rest of the Thai railway network. The branch line was originally intended to go all the way to Tak but this never happened. During the line’s heyday, it used to transport not only passengers but also sand from the Yom River, logs and other locally produced goods. There are currently 3 stations on the line: Ban Dara, Khlong Maphlap in the small town of Si Nakhon, and Sawankhalok but there also used to be 4 halts that have all since been closed. The line was closed in April 2020 due to covid but opened once again when new train service 405/406 restarted on the 15th July 2023. It runs between Sila At and Sawankhalok and replaces the old service trains 3 & 4 that ran between Bangkok and Sawankhalok via Sila At/Uttaradit.
