After 15 years of studying languages, I've finally decided to make one of these typical "polyglot speaks a 100 languages" videos. Hopefully it's useful/entertaining. But if there's only ONE thing I want everyone to know it's that anyone can be a polyglot. If you speak one language, you can speak 10! It all comes down to the time you're willing to put into it, just like any other skill you seek to acquire. FYI, I've spent between 25,000-30,000 hours studying/speaking foreign languages, about 4-5 hours a day for the past 16 years. That's to give you an idea of the time required to learn many languages at a conversational level. Lastly, my idea of fluency is based on listening fluency. What I mean by that is that I seek to reach a level where I can understand what a native speaker is saying to me and respond in a way that convinces them I'm capable of carrying on with a normal/natural conversation in their language. If I can do that, then I'll move on to studying another language (while still maintaining previous ones). With that definition of fluency, I can speak 14 languages (up to Lao). Obviously, I'll forget words in every language, but once I get back to using a language often, they reappear.
