STEEDA CLUTCH ASSIST SPRING INSTALL! | FOCUS RS

The interior of my Focus RS gets another Steeda mod installed - the clutch assist spring! The latest mod from Steeda UK in my Focus RS on the interior is pretty much invisible once installed and addresses a particular issue that has been identified in the MK3 Ford Focus RS and ST! The clutch assist spring can be an issue for a couple of reasons. The stock spring has a tendency to cause a creaking noise unless very well greased (minor issue) but the main thing is that the spring can push the pedal with so much force on the return stroke that it 'pings' upward. This can cause some hoppy, unintentionally uneven clutch releasing as well as in general not feeling linear and smooth but rather suddenly harsh for no reason or benefit. The reason this happens is simply down to how big the spring is. Putting the stock sprint and Steeda spring side by side you will see that the Steeda spring is much smaller and thinner. This means that the harshness of the stock setup can be dialled out while still retaining the intended clutch return assist setup that Ford intended. Some people have suggested that you can simply run without a spring at all and while this is true, it means that the pedal will not return all the way to the top so risks damage to the slave cylinder so is really a bad idea. Steeda have put the time in to work out the ideal spring rate and to bring it to market along with an additional rubber bushing to further smooth things out. The result is simply exactly what Steeda claim - improvement in overall clutch feel by the removal of the stock spring's harshness. This improvement in clutch pedal feel goes a long way to improving both slow traffic clutching as well as high speed clutching, improving the confidence you have in where the clutch is going to engage and disengage and not doing anything unexpected. Originally Steeda provided the spring and bushing and that was it - you had to then crack apart the factory perch, swap springs and then click it back together. This was fine and indeed you can still buy the Steeda spring on its own, however Steeda decided to provide an option with a fully assembled spring and replacement perch set up to make it a simple straight swap. The benefit of this option, other that convenience, is that the breaking apart of the stock perch can be tricky and prone to breakage which would not be fun if you want to get back on the road quick! So I went for the fully pre-assembled option and indeed it is a quick and easy upgrade as you will see!
