The 2,000-Year-Old Computer They Can't Explain | Antikythera Mechanism

In 1901, sponge divers off the coast of a tiny Greek island pulled a corroded lump of bronze from a Roman shipwreck. Inside: 37 interlocking bronze gears, built in 150 BC. Not a clock. Not an astrolabe. A computer. The Antikythera Mechanism could predict solar and lunar eclipses decades in advance. It tracked the eccentric orbit of the moon using epicyclic gearing — a mathematical concept not rediscovered in European clockmaking until the fourteenth century. It even had a dial for the four Panhellenic athletic festivals, including the Olympics. And then it vanished. For a thousand years, no one built anything like it again.
