I Walked Back Into The Dark

I WALKED BACK INTO THE DARK is Track XV from Part I RECRUITED BY PAIN in the series THE WAR BEHIND THE STREETS. Leaving the darkness does not always mean never returning to the place where it found you. Sometimes a transformed person must return without allowing the old environment to reclaim their identity. The narrator receives a call from one of the young men he once influenced. The young man wants to leave but believes the people surrounding him will not allow it. The narrator walks back into the same environment that once gave him belonging rank protection and recognition. He does not return to reclaim his position. He does not return to condemn anyone. He does not return to prove he is still dangerous. He returns for one young life. The old circle reminds him of everything he owes. They question his courage accuse him of weakness and attempt to awaken the anger that once controlled him. The narrator recognizes that the old life is not tempting him with its graves. It is tempting him with belonging. When the confrontation comes he does not retaliate. He stands between the young man and the cycle then walks away with him. No sirens follow them. No mother receives the call. No casket learns the young man’s name. The streets remember who the narrator used to be. Jesus knows the man underneath.
