Boublichki/Beygelech -- by Yakov Jadow

Hazzan Natasha Hirshhorn, soprano solo Brad German, clarinet solo This Russian song's story of a poor young woman begging passersby to buy her bagels so she can earn a living belies its upbeat melody. When Jewish emigrants brought the song to Brooklyn, it became a hit among the newly arrived Yiddish-speaking Americans. It is said the famous Barry sisters -- whose original name was Bagelman -- got discovered while humming this tune. Once the two became famous, they reportedly came to start every performance with this song.
