But when classical pianists appear on Tiny Desk, they face a challenge that many audiences barely notice: instead of performing on a concert grand piano, they're often asked to play on a humble upright. For many pianists, that sounds like a nightmare. Upright pianos have a different action, a different sound, and a very different relationship to resonance and projection. Yet somehow, some of the world's greatest pianists manage to create performances that are every bit as compelling as those heard in the concert hall. In this video, Robert Fleitz reacts to Tiny Desk performances by Marc-André Hamelin, Yunchan Lim, Víkingur Ólafsson, and Isata Kanneh-Mason, exploring how each pianist approaches the limitations and possibilities of the upright piano. Along the way, he examines the surprising strengths of upright pianos, the relationship between instrument and interpretation, and why some performances become more moving—not less—when stripped of the grandeur of the concert stage. Featuring discussions of piano technique, sound production, pedaling, historical performance practice, and the very different artistic choices these pianists make when confronted with the same instrument.
