On March 16, 2014, a young woman named Giuliana Peralta reported that after an outing with a group of soccer players from Independiente de Avellaneda, she went to the home of one of them and had sex with him. She claimed that she had fallen asleep next to him and woke up to find another player, Alexis Zárate, already sexually assaulting her. What followed was a lengthy legal process, in which various members of the Independiente squad appeared before the court to assert that the sexual encounter had occurred, but that it was not rape. Defense experts maintained that it was impossible for the young woman to have only become aware of the assault once it was already happening, in a bed where there were two players.
